Outdoor activities company Go Below has introduced the Deep Hotel, the world’s deepest hotel, located in Wales. A staggering 419 meters underground within the Snowdonia National Park, this unique lodging promises an unforgettable “mine” experience that combines adventure and accommodation.
The Deep Hotel takes guests on an immersive journey through the historic Cwmorthin slate mine, allowing them to delve into the depths of Welsh mining history while spending a night underground. In fact, accessing the hotel is an adventure in itself, as visitors navigate a steep and demanding route through the remnants of old pathways and staircases, originally built so that miners could move around inside the mine.
Regarding sleep arrangements, Go Below, the company behind the innovative hotel, provides a decent range of accommodation options, including four private cabins with twin beds and a romantic grotto featuring a double bed. These cozy retreats, aptly named “cabins”, ensure a comfortable environment despite the constant temperature of around 10 degrees Celsius throughout the year. Equipped with essential amenities such as running water, electricity and even Wi-Fi connectivity through a kilometer-long Ethernet cable connected to a 4G antenna on the surface, guests can enjoy all the modern conveniences while being immersed in the fascinating underground world.
To experience the Deep Hotel, adventurous souls need to join the Go Below team at their base near the city of Blaenau Ffestiniog. The hotel operates exclusively on Saturdays, welcoming guests at 17h00. The journey begins with a scenic 45-minute hike through the majestic mountains of Snowdonia, before participants pause at a quaint cottage to prepare for their descent into the abandoned mine.
Guided by experienced instructors, guests then embark on an exhilarating route through the mine, encountering ancient stairs, abandoned bridges and even traversing certain sections using ropes. After approximately an hour, they’ll finally reach the Deep Hotel, where a warm drink and a delicious meal await.
Naturally, safety is paramount at the Deep Hotel, with instructors and technical staff sleeping in their own adjacent cabins to provide assistance and ensure guests’ well-being. The following morning, a hearty breakfast will be served before starting the ascent back to the surface, capping off the unforgettable underground experience.
For those seeking a truly remarkable getaway, prices at the Deep Hotel start from 350£ for two people in the twin room. The double bed grotto, offering a romantic ambiance, is available for 550£.
